I will use both formative and summative assessment to ascertain the level of understanding and acquisition of skills pertaining to this science unit.
Formative assessment: Why?
In order to gather evidence of student understanding during my instruction and provide me the timely ability to change that course of instruction to better fit the students' abilities. This modification of instruction must specifically address the learning deficiency and can be utilized immediately in the next concurrent class of same topic. This assessment will be occuring in each of the lessons, primarily when I am circulating around the class observing small group or individual classwork, asking probing questions in order to ascertain understanding. I will be providing behavior specific positive reinforcement for good work and specific redirection for misunderstanding throughout both activities, all the while noting the level of understanding or specifics of misunderstanding.
Other specific examples of formative assessment :
Lesson 4 - Monitoring of students completing 1st part of Density Homework in Class, as well as reviewing complete homework next day.
Lesson 5 - Review Density Lab worksheet for understanding.
Lesson 6 - Pop quiz at beginning of class.
Lesson 7-8 Good opportunity to glean information during the small group presentations as well as the peer centered questioning.
Lesson 9 - Completion of KWL chart.
Ongoing review of each Science Ring - The Earth tool.
Summative assessment: Why?
The goal of summative assessments is to make a judgment of student competency -- after an instructional phase is complete. This will be the basis on which the students will be graded. Summative assessment results of the unit should not be a complete surprise to the teacher. If the teacher ahs properly evaluated and utilized the aforementioned formative assessment evidence then summative assessments should simply buttress what formative assessment uncovered.
Specific examples of summative assessment :
The completion of each student's Science Ring - The Earth tool.
Homeworks - Density Homework, Drawing of the Earth.
Classwork - Density Lab Worksheet. Pop quiz, Final unit test.
I will correct each Homework and Classwork quickly and return to the students promptly to give them an opportunity to correct their work and receive partial credit in improving their grades. I will also give them a handout explaining how each summative assessment contributes to their overall grade.
I will formally review each Science Ring - The Earth tool at least once in the 2+ week process and provide written feedback to all students providing positive feedback for satisfactory work and specific redirection for unsatisfactory or incomplete work.
